Ocean Five Podcast brings marine conservation to your ears

Marine protection. And directly to your ears. That's exactly the aim of the Ocean Five podcast. For over four years and with more than 50 episodes, the podcast has been bringing marine conservation into your living room. What can a marine conservation city like Kiel achieve? How has the path to becoming a marine conservation city gone so far? You can find answers to questions about marine conservation in Ocean Five!

Marine protection meets podcast

Marine protection in Kiel: The Kiel Fjord and the Baltic Sea not only characterise the climate, but also the regional culture, economy and quality of life. Coastal fishing, sailing and tourism depend directly on healthy marine ecosystems - polluted water, waste and acidification directly jeopardise jobs and leisure activities. Kiel is also on its way to becoming a marine conservation city and is placing marine conservation at the centre of the city's activities.

A podcast focussing on Kiel and its Baltic Sea can make the topic tangible: Listeners from the region recognise their own surroundings - this creates identification and motivation to get involved. In-depth insights into projects such as beach clean-ups or environmental education in Kiel not only bring facts to the listener's ears, but also a real connection. A podcast makes marine conservation in Kiel tangible, relevant and action-orientated.

“Marine conservation is colourful - and so is a marine conservation city.”

One topic, five perspectives

Ocean Five - the name says it all. One topic, five perspectives. Each season of the podcast is dedicated to a central aspect of marine conservation and examines it from five very different angles.

Max, the presenter, takes listeners on an acoustic journey of discovery: Sometimes he talks to scientists about the latest research findings, sometimes he discusses specific protection measures with politicians or lets voices from environmental protection organisations have their say. People who live directly by or with the sea also have their say.

“Climate change, biodiversity and people are part of one system. We really need to look at this together.”

Katja Matthes, Director GEOMAR

This makes it possible to present even complex topics such as fishing, climate protection or the concept of Kiel as a marine conservation city in a multi-layered and understandable way. The view from different perspectives enables a holistic understanding - exciting, well-founded and always built close to the water.

“None of these topics have the big bang like the disasters that we now see every day in the daily news [...] that result from the climate crisis. But the catastrophe itself is at least as big.”

Tobias Goldschmidt, Environmental Minister of Schleswig-Holstein
