KVG Kieler Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH – Every second bus will soon be fully electric
In Kiel, the conversion to an emission-free bus fleet is in full swing. Today, 70 buses are already fully electric, all powered by 100% green electricity. By February 2026, 122 of the 218 KVG buses will be fully electric. If you add the 33 hybrid buses, 71% of the fleet will be emission-free or significantly lower in emissions..
The goal is to switch completely to electric drives by 2032 at the latest.
Opportunity charging for fast charging
Parallel to the growing fleet, the charging infrastructure is also growing – not only technically, but also with a well-thought-out concept. Particularly clever is the so-called opportunity charging. The idea behind this is that e-buses are not only charged at night in the depot, but also in between at the
Terminals – exactly where they take a short break anyway.
In Kiel and Kronshagen, 32 charging points at central hubs now provide fresh energy. At the Werftstraße depot and at 10 terminal stops in the Kiel city area, KVG has installed fast chargers with a whopping 420 kW charging capacity. This saves time, space, and additional charging points in the depot.
Sustainable mobility is something to be proud of
What sounds purely functional has long been more than that. These charging points have become part of the cityscape. They have been and continue to be creatively designed – for example, with a maritime motif of the Gorch Fock and the Thor Heyerdahl in Schilksee or with a wildflower meadow at the Botanical Garden.
Energy flows in the depot at night
Twenty modern depot chargers are also available at the Werftstraße depot for charging the 12-meter standard buses at night. The second depot on Diedrichstraße has also been made future-proof. Forty-three charging points for the next generation of 50 electric buses have just been installed here.
