From Coast to Concept – Welcome to the KielRegion
As a living and economic area, the KielRegion, consisting of the districts of Plön, Rendsburg-Eckernfördeand the state capital Kiel, is directly dependent on the condition of its coasts and seas. As a regional network, the KielRegion combines innovation, sustainability, and participation.
Together, we are making our region smarter, more liveable and more sustainable. To this end, we implement projects in our focus areas of EconomicRegion, MobilityRegion and FutureRegion. We also support and connect people from politics, business, science, and administration. This is how we create sustainable prospects for the future. The proximity to the sea not only shapes the landscape, lifestyle and recreational value, but is also the starting point for responsibility. This is why the KielRegion is involved in various projects for climate and coastal protection. In this context, the KielRegion is presenting key future projects that focus precisely on this topic.
Our central concern is the protection and sustainable development of our shared living space. As part of the KielRegion 2030 strategy process, the topic of climate was defined as a new regional focus. This resulted in the Climate Master Plan, which sets out concrete measures to make the region resilient to the consequences of the climate crisis.

The SmarterLeben | KielRegion model project, which is developing digital solutions for a liveable region, is also future-oriented. SmarterLeben | KielRegion is a joint project of the state capital Kiel and the districts of Plön and Rendsburg-Eckernförde and is being implemented together with the KielRegion. It is currently one of 73 Model Projects Smart Cities (MPSC) and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB).

The KielRegion thinks maritime, not just geographically, but strategically.
One of the focus topics of the SmarterLeben project is regional coastal management. Here, the KielRegion is working together with various partners on innovative projects to sustainably secure our coastal landscapes and shape them together with citizens. Two upcoming measures provide an insight: The Digital Coastal Map, which bundles information on risks, protective measures and natural values, and the Citizen Science project ClimateBlue, which invites inhabitants of the coastal region from northern Germany all the way up to Denmark to actively collect and share knowledge about their coast.
The KielRegion thinks maritime, not just geographically, but strategically. For a region that is taking cooperative paths into the future in harmony with its location by the sea.
