Boris Herrmann receives the German Ocean Award 2024
Renowned German sailor Boris Herrmann has been honoured with the esteemed "Deutscher Meerespreis" (German Ocean Award), presented by the Prof. Dr. Werner Petersen Foundation. This award, in partnership with the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, recognises Herrmann's significant contributions as an oceanambassador and his efforts in bringing marine research to the public.
With the support of Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister President Daniel Günther, the ceremony applauded Herrmann's commitment to climate action and ocean conservation. His sailing yacht, Malizia - Seaexplorer, proudly displays the message “A Race We Must Win – Climate Action Now!”, highlighting the urgency of environmental efforts. Team Malizia has played a crucial role in collecting oceanographic data during races and promoting marine education.
Professor Dr Katja Matthes from GEOMAR praised Herrmann for his dual role in advocacy and important data collection for scientific research. Minister President Günther recognised him as a role model and a champion of environmental education, noting his dedication to climate protection.
The €20,000 prize acknowledges Herrmann’s extensive work in ocean conservation. Dr h.c. Klaus-Jürgen Wichmann, Chairman of the Prof. Dr Werner Petersen Foundation, emphasised the foundation's mission to support sustainable development and ocean protection through such recognitions.
“I am proud of what we have achieved with our Team Malizia,” said Boris Herrmann. “This award honours the long-standing work of the entire team, our partners and supporters worldwide, and my wife Birte with our educational programme ‘My Ocean Challenge’. We see this award as an incentive to continue our mission with vigour.”
As the first German to complete the Vendée Globe in 2020 and a key participant in the last edition of The Ocean Race, where Team Malizia secured 3rd place, Boris remains active in major races and works closely with GEOMAR. His ongoing efforts and collaborations underscore his important role in both the sailing and scientific communities.
The ceremony, attended by around 200 guests from various sectors, showcased the broad support for Boris's work and the important connection between sports, science, and environmental advocacy.
