KielRegion - Science meets sea breeze
About algae, space and revolutions

"How do algae communicate?", "How much carbon do salt marshes store?" or "What problems does a 500-million-year-old worm cause in the laboratory?" Questions that you have of course always asked yourself - or at the latest when they are illuminated in an exciting way at the science shows as part of the KielRegion Science Summer.

Just imagine: You're lying comfortably in a deckchair, the sun tickling your face, a cool lemonade in your hand and the salty breeze blowing around your nose while your feet feel the warm sand and you hear something about seagulls.

About seagulls? That's right!

A young scientist stands in front of you and talks enthusiastically about her research - and about anecdotes involving three-toed gulls.
Her own fascination captivates you and draws you into her world.
And not just you: all around you, young and old hungry for knowledge listen spellbound as your gaze wanders out to sea.

You can experience something similar at the KielRegion's Ocean Science Show.
Young marine scientists present their current research projects there - right on the water, in the middle of the action. The topics range from the search for clues from space, to stones as a key to the history of the earth, to a perhaps significant revolution in the fight against microplastics in the sea.

In entertaining and easy-to-understand presentations, they report on the fascinations, problems and challenges in their world of research.
The sometimes complex content is explained in a generally understandable and exciting way - without you having to have any prior knowledge.

It shows that research can inspire

And the KielRegion is not only known for sails and surfboards, but also for science with depth. It shows the world we live in today and how we can help shape the world of tomorrow through research in the KielRegion.

“Our aim is to make science tangible - approachable, entertaining and at the centre of people's everyday lives. Where better to do this than in the sun, sand and sea air?”

Sünje Fock, Project Manager Science Summer

The Ocean Science Show is just one part of the major Science Summer event series, which runs from April to September throughout the Kiel region. Whether lectures, hands-on activities or hands-on research - here science becomes visible, audible and tangible.
The crowning finale is the Science Day on 26 September - part of the European Researchers' Night, which involves over 30 cities across Europe with more than 300 events.

Prague, Vienna, Madrid, Stockholm - and Kiel

A strong signal for the importance of the region in the international scientific dialogue.

Anyone who missed the Ocean Science Show in May - or was so impressed that they want to come again - will get another chance on 25 July at 5 pm at the Baltic Sea Info Centre in Eckernförde. With your feet in the sand, the sound of the sea behind you - and a view of the future of research.
