Meermachen: Strengthening maritime cooperation and utilising opportunities
The start of the Ocean Race Europe in Kiel in August will once again put Schleswig-Holstein at the centre of the international maritime world. It is a symbolic moment for the region between the seas - and at the same time an ideal starting point for focussing on the future of the "Meermachen" initiative.
The platform, supported by the IHK Schleswig-Holstein and the Schleswig-Holstein office of the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany (MCN), has quickly become an important tool for maritime networking. The task now is to continue along the path that has been taken and to develop new formats, content and opportunities for participation.
A central element of the future strategy is the further expansion of the interactive maritime map of Schleswig-Holstein. This digital platform highlights the diversity of maritime players in the state – from shipyards, research institutes and suppliers to associations and sailing clubs. The aim is to identify new interfaces for cooperation, strengthen regional ties and systematically record and expand the economic potential of the maritime industry. In future, training centres, maritime events and innovation projects will also be specifically integrated.

Another key instrument is the maritime events calendar. It brings together events from the worlds of business, science, tourism and water sports in one place. Whether it's a symposium, sailing competition, shipyard tour or international conference, the calendar not only makes planning and participation easier, but also increases the visibility of maritime offerings in the state. Especially in the run-up to major events such as Kieler Woche, the calendar provides a valuable overview of parallel initiatives.
Another focus is on expanding the subpage ‘Career opportunities in the maritime industry’. In a few weeks, a digital showcase for training, study, further education and careers in maritime professions will be created here. In view of the increasing demand for skilled workers, it is crucial to specifically target young people and career changers. The page will bundle information on job profiles and experience reports – including in the fields of sailing, boat building and maritime tourism.
The start of the Ocean Race Europe in Kiel marks a sporting highlight in the maritime calendar. The ‘Meermachen’project is taking advantage of the opportunity for greater visibility to continue to grow, strengthen its network and create concrete added value for the economy, society and the environment. Expanding the map, strengthening the calendar of events and highlighting career opportunities are only the first steps. Those who participate are actively shaping the maritime future of Schleswig-Holstein – sustainably, innovatively and collectively.
