Meermachen: actively shaping the future of the maritime economy

The maritime industry in Schleswig-Holstein is facing fundamental change. Climate protection, digitalisation, securing skilled workers and international competitiveness are presenting new challenges for companies and research institutions alike. In order to actively and cooperatively shape this change, the IHK Schleswig-Holstein and the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany (MCN) have launched the ‘Meermachen’ project.

‘Meermachen’ aims to better connect maritime stakeholders in Schleswig-Holstein, support their visibility and serve as a platform for young maritime talent and events.

The initiative is aimed at companies from all maritime sectors: shipbuilding and its suppliers, mariculture and aquaculture, marine bioresources, marine technology, shipping and maritime logistics, ports, the offshore industry, maritime services and administration, research and development, as well as players in maritime tourism. Because one thing is clear: the maritime future is interdisciplinary and constantly needs new alliances.

1. Actively shaping transformation: The maritime sector is undergoing profound changes. ‘Meermachen’ offers a platform to help shape this change through networking and communication, rather than just managing it.

2. Promoting innovation: Many companies are working on digital, sustainable or technological solutions. ‘Meermachen’ helps to make projects and developments more visible, to network them and to leverage synergies.

3. Practical policy advice: The IHK Schleswig-Holstein and the MCN use the results of the initiative to make well-founded recommendations to decision-makers at state and federal level – with strong links to the reality of the companies.

4. Securing skilled workers: ‘Meermachen’ also addresses the need for labour and skilled workers in the maritime industry. Targeted networking with educational institutions and universities is creating new perspectives for training and further education, as well as for maritime career opportunities.

5. Making voices heard: The project gives smaller companies, start-ups and associations in particular the opportunity to raise their concerns and offer themselves as partners in the development of future strategies.

6. Providing information: There are many events in the regions, but also nationwide and even internationally. The Meermachen calendar helps to keep track of them all.

Meermachen thrives on participation. Entries on the map help with visibility. But the events ‘Meermachen Future Dialogue’ and ‘Meermachen: Impulses from Research’ also break new ground for exchange, knowledge transfer and the development of innovative projects. The topics range from climate-neutral shipping and smart ports to sustainable tourism and digitalisation in sailing.

All suggestions, experiences and project ideas are systematically collected, evaluated and translated into recommendations for action, which in turn can be submitted to the Maritime Economy Working Group of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Industry and Commerce. This creates a shared vision of the future – well-founded, practical and action-oriented.

• Shape the future: those who get involved can actively influence the future of the maritime economy in Schleswig-Holstein.

• Build networks: ‘Meermachen’ promotes exchange across industry and sector boundaries.

• Advance your own projects: Participants gain visibility for their ideas and can find cooperation partners.

• Provide impetus for sailing: The sailing sector also benefits from innovations in sustainability, infrastructure and digitalisation. ‘Meermachen’ offers a platform to address these issues.

The ‘Meermachen’ project is more than just a participation format – it is a call to action. The maritime industry in Schleswig-Holstein has the potential to become an international pioneer in sustainability, innovation and cooperation. To achieve this goal, the collective will and ideas of all those involved are needed. Those who participate not only move water, but also the future. That's why: Meermachen!
