Maritime tourism in the land between the seas
Maritime tourism is a key economic factor in Schleswig-Holstein. With its 1,110 kilometres of coastline on the North Sea and Baltic Sea, numerous canals and inland waterways, and a deeply rooted maritime culture, the state offers ideal conditions for water sports, seaside recreation and nautical experiences. Maritime tourism contributes significantly to regional value creation and is also an important location factor for the tourism industry, crafts and retail trade.
Sailing is one of the outstanding flagships of maritime tourism in Schleswig-Holstein. The Baltic Sea coast, with its sheltered bays, varied sailing areas and short distances to neighbouring Scandinavian countries, is particularly popular with sailors. With its numerous sailing clubs, marinas, sailing schools and charter companies, Schleswig-Holstein offers a well-developed infrastructure for beginners and ambitious regatta sailors alike.
In addition, traditional sailing ships, youth sailing camps and training events play an important role in promoting young talent and fostering a love of water sports. Investments in modern moorings, environmentally friendly technology and barrier-free facilities in particular can further strengthen the sailing offer in the future.

The approximately 200 marinas and recreational boat harbours in the state are central hubs for maritime tourism. They not only serve as contact points for boat tourists, but also function as local business locations with offerings in gastronomy, retail, boat services and tourist information.
In order to remain attractive in the future, there are several areas for action:
• Digitisation of port organisation (e.g. online booking systems, smart berth management)
• Sustainability (e.g. shore power connections, wastewater disposal, nature-oriented design)
• Tourist networking with the hinterland (cycle paths, gastronomy, cultural offerings)
The latter is important because, in addition to their nautical functionality and attractiveness, sustainable marinas must also be designed as tourist attractions.
Major maritime events such as Kieler Woche, Travemünde Week and harbour festivals along the coast attract millions of visitors every year. They combine sporting competitions, cultural highlights and tourist experiences and are important instruments for extending the season and building image.
These events harbour great economic potential, particularly through overnight stays, restaurant sales and retail. They also promote identification with the region and the visibility of Schleswig-Holstein as a water sports destination.
Despite the favourable starting position, there are also various challenges in maritime tourism:
• The shortage of skilled workers in port operations, tourism services and boat building
• The need for investment in modern infrastructure, particularly with regard to climate adaptation and digitalisation, but also to remedy the silting up of ports and their access channels
• Growing competitive pressure from other European regions and changing tourist expectations
Maritime tourism is a key economic and cultural resource for Schleswig-Holstein. Sailing, marinas and maritime events form the heart of this segment. They not only offer experiences for guests, but also jobs, training and development opportunities for the region.
