Arved Fuchs starts OCEAN CHANGE 2025 expedition
Arved Fuchs and his sailing ship DAGMAR AAEN set off on the next stage of their climate expedition
Expedition. Now in its tenth year, the Bad Bramstedt native is continuing his scientific
Expedition series OCEAN CHANGE to investigate the effects of climate change on the oceans
on the oceans.
This year's leg will focus on two important sea areas: the eastern Baltic Sea – an ecologically sensitive inland sea – as well as the North Sea and the eastern Atlantic. The eight-strong crew, led by Arved Fuchs, is pursuing a dual objective: to collect sound data for science and at the same time raise public awareness of marine conservation.

Science on board - real-time data for research
Throughout the expedition, the crew collects meteorological and oceanographic data – including salinity, CO₂ saturation and surface water temperature – in collaboration with the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. The data is available to the scientific community free of charge and can be accessed in real time at beluga.geomar.de. At the same time, further measured values are continuously transmitted by satellite to the German Weather Service (DWD).
By participating in the "Citizen Science" pilot project "Sailing for Oxygen" (organised by GEOMAR and Trans-Ocean e.V.), Arved Fuchs wants to encourage other sailing crews to actively participate in the collection of marine data in the Baltic Sea.
A camera attached to the jib boom of the Dagmar Aaen will be used to photograph the seawater throughout the expedition. The colour of the water alone provides scientists with valuable information on the ecological status. The data collected here flows into the international "Citizen Science" project EyeOnWater, in which people around the world are participating. Arved Fuchs wants to show how easily we can all support marine research with a smartphone and the EyeOnWater app.
Arved Fuchs – Ambassador of the German Committee of the UN Ocean Decade
Arved Fuchs has been travelling in the polar regions for over 40 years. He has witnessed climate change on all his expeditions and is therefore committed to protecting the polar regions and the oceans.
As part of the OCEAN CHANGE expedition, he has already travelled over 45,000 nautical miles along the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream (AMOC – Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation) with his international crew and his now 94-year-old, ice-going sailing cutter Dagmar Aaen.
